Jagger was completely emaciated and had problems breathing due to kennel cough and an upper respiratory infection and he was running a fever when we took him home on July 16, 2011. He was found just a week earlier tied to a fence, crying, and trying with all his might to chew himself free. Someone discarded him without even a second thought. We had no idea how much work we were facing in helping him heal both physically and mentally, but after just a few days of having him in our home we knew he was worth the time and money. In July 2011 he weighed in at about 25lbs, and now, July 2012 he is right under 70lbs and completely healthy. I sometimes wonder how I lived without him for so long. He is one of the most gentle and kind dogs I have ever met. He has taught me the real meaning of what it means to have courage and to move on from your past, a lesson I have personally struggled with for a long time.
If anyone is looking to add a pet to their family, please please please consider adoption. The amount of love that these dogs have to give is unbelievable, and they thank you day in and day out for giving them a home. Jagger is my constant and unfaltering rock when things get tough. We do not share a common language, but when I smile at him, he comes running, and generally doesn't stop until I am on the floor being licked and totally submerged in his love.
Jagger wants other people to become more aware about how important it is to adopt a pet, and not just buy from a pet store. Shelter dogs have a TON of love to give and hey, we all deserve a second chance right? I had a kidney infection over the winter and was in bed for days. Jag did not leave my side once, not even when his dog walker came to take him to the park. He must have been super bored, but he stayed in bed with me and made sure to be facing me at all times. Every time I moved or tried to get up, he was right there next to me and following me slowly around the apartment. For anyone in Northern NJ, the Liberty Humane Society of Jersey City (Libertyhumane.org/) has a ton of dogs and cats that are looking for homes. Plus, they are always looking for volunteers to help walk dogs and cuddle with the kitties. There are a ton of ways to help shelter animals, and it doesn't just have to be financially! A dog is the only creature who will love you more than he loves himself. It's true. And it's amazing to share a bond that strong.
Thanks again to everyone at the Chive.
